MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The future of Dane County’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum is under review, and community members had the opportunity to weigh in on Wednesday during a special walkthrough and public meeting.
Built in 1967, the Coliseum has served for decades as a central venue for concerts, graduations, sporting events, and cultural gatherings. However, local leaders say the facility now requires significant updates to remain relevant for future generations.
During an afternoon media tour, Dane County Executive Melissa Agard and Alliant Energy Center Director Kevin Scheibler led local press through the aging venue, pointing out several areas in need of improvement. Among the most pressing issues: narrow entrances, outdated security and accessibility features, and a guest experience that doesn’t meet modern expectations.
Scheibler emphasized that today’s audiences expect more than a place to simply attend a concert or event—they’re looking for a comprehensive experience, which the current facility struggles to deliver. The tour also highlighted the building’s aging infrastructure and dated design, including popcorn ceilings, limited space for security screening, and an overall atmosphere Scheibler described as more “industrial” than welcoming.
