Alliant Energy Center needs to grow, but funding and focus are obstacles

In late 2018, Dane County leaders embraced a far-reaching plan to overhaul the Alliant Energy Center over the following two decades with new and expanded facilities, road and parking improvements, pedestrian-oriented open spaces and extensive private development, including housing, hotels, office space, restaurants and retail.

Six and a half years later, the 164-acre campus hasn’t changed. Its aging buildings are straining more than ever to accommodate big annual events like the World Dairy Expo and the Midwest Horse Fair while, between events, the campus grows quiet.

County Executive Melissa Agard, who took over in the county’s top role last November, said she is committed to transforming the county-owned property on Madison’s South Side into a year-round destination.
