Renovate the Dane County Coliseum? Agard moves to save events venue

After hosting decades of events including hockey games, circuses, fairs and performances by legends like Frank Sinatra, Dane County leaders say the Alliant Energy Center’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum deserves a makeover.

The county is drafting a request for proposals this spring to gather ideas and pitches from firms interested in taking on the renovation project, which broadly aims to create a space that is more functional and welcoming for fans, performers and crews.

“We are going to be able to do that by investing in this redevelopment so that it is a place people want to be,” Dane County Executive Melissa Agard told the Cap Times. “We're going to be able to provide generations of new people here in Dane County with those core memories and amazing experiences.”

While the county has considered demolishing the Coliseum, originally built in 1967, Agard said she and Alliant Energy Center executive director Kevin Scheibler are moving toward renovation plans after receiving community feedback.
